Been reading ';Everyday Use,'; eh? ';Hakim'; is an Arabic name, as well as one of the titles of Allah, and means ';doctor'; or ';learned one.'; As for ';Baba,'; the rest of the name by which Dee's companion introduces himself, it may really mean ';barber,'; but the point is that that's the way Dee's mother, the narrator, HEARS it, and she veers between being unimpressed and wondering whether he indeed has an honest job. (Hajji Baba, in the novel and film of that name, really was a barber.) Translate hakim a barber?
Hakim is bio or local doctor who dont have any degree like MBBS etc. and Hakeem is a barber sometime too. he do minor surgeries. it still happened in Africa and Asia's country sides who are far away from big cities and developed towns.
