';barber shaves all those and only those who don't shave themselves.';
He shaves the ones who don't shave themselves, therefore there are others that shave themselves. Since they shave themselves, they don't need him to shave them. Also, he is capable of shaving himself.Who shaves the barber? ANSWER the barber?
There are actually 3 answers.
Although it is typically thought that barbers are male then the answer would be ANY WOMAN.
The definition of a barber is: one whose business is cutting and dressing hair, shaving and trimming beards, and performing related services. That being said (taking out gender), the answer could be: THE BARBER IS FEMALE %26amp; DOESN'T NEED TO SHAVE. This works as long as you don't get into the ';what about her legs, etc';.
The 3rd answer comes from understanding sentence structure. The statement AS IT IS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN says: There is a village where the barber shaves all those and only those who don't shave themselves.
The barber (Subject/Noun) shaves (verb) %26lt;%26lt;%26lt;ALL THOSE AND ONLY THOSE WHO DON'T SHAVE THEMSELVES%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; (COMPOUND Predicate). This means EVERYONE who doesn't shave themselves %26amp; those individuals who DO shave themselves aren't shaved by the barber. MEANING ANYONE who shaves THEMSELVES can ALSO SHAVE THE BARBER!Who shaves the barber? ANSWER the barber?
That is a paradox, none of the possible answers work.
If the barber shaves himself, and he can only shave those who don't shave themselves, therefore he cannot shave himself, which is contradictory.
If the barber doesn't shave himself, and he shaves everyone who does not shave themselves, therefore he shaves himself, which is also contradictory.
Therefore, it's a paradox, kind of like. ';The next sentence is true. The previous sentence is false.';
Everybody makes this a lot more complicated than it is... The answer is very simple and there is no ';paradox';. People always look at this question in terms of ';people who shave themselves'; and ';people who don't';, using this reasoning the question doesn't really even make sense HOWEVER, how they SHOULD look at it is ';people who are the barber'; and ';people who aren't';. Anybody who shaves themselves do not go to get shaved by the barber. The solution to the problem is that the barber is BOTH, he is the barber and he is also a regular person. When he shaves himself he is not acting as a barber since he is not charging himself to shave, and he is not doing it in the form of his professional capacity as barber. Therefore he becomes one of the people who shaves themselves, and doesn't get shaved by the barber (since he is not the barber while shaving himself)
Problem solved
He can't shave himself because he doesn't shave people that shave themselves, and if he shaves himself, then he is shaving someone that shaves themselves, which he doesn't do...
I think this is the stupidest riddle/paradox on earth!! There is no answer to it!! I could just as easily say well the barber from another village shaves that barber!! Or somebody else in the village shaves the barber because they aren't restricted to the ';only those who shave themselves'; rule. I can't believe that was featured on Yahoo's homepage, it just makes me mad that there is no definite answer to it!! AHH!! Can't we all just hit the Staple's easy button and stick to the ';Why did the chicken cross the road?'; kind of riddles?
Assuming that the barber is male, the barber can shave himself, but can do this only one time in his lifetime.
A barber shaves all those and only those who do not shave themselves. Initially, the barber has never shaved himself in his lifetime. He goes ahead and shaves himself for the first time. Now that he has shaved himself ( for the first time ), he no longer can shave himself in the future, because he can only shave all those and only those who do not shave themselves.
The question has an answer that is possibly a one time event in that man's lifetime. No paradox here...
The barber just goes to another village and finds a barber that only shaves people who don't shave themselves
What if the barber is a woman (not a particularly hairy one)?
Just joking...
Sweeney Todd shaves the barber and then he slits his throat and has Mrs. Lovett make him into a pie. Delicious.
Whatever.
